Note | "Memoirs of the Societe academique d’archeologie, sciences et arts du department de l'Oise, Beauvais" The name of the family of Brossard, says M. Dieudonne Dergny, is one of those noble families of our country, which we have most often recalled on the inscriptions of the bells of the country of Bray (The Bells of Bray, pg 132) The Brossard Family is a native of Brittany. We owe to the benevolence of M. de Brossard (Theophile-Modeste), doctor of medicine at Grandvilliers (Olse), one of the descendants of this ancient noble family (having succeeded as a heir to the paternal line), and to Louis-Charles de la Rue, the genealogy that follows that we hasten to reproduce: Of the Earl of Broschard, one of the most influential lords of the council of Hughes-Capet, king of France in 987, descended Helene de Broschard, who become the lover of Charles of France, Count of Valois and Alencon, son of King Philip the Bold. Helene de Brossard had from this prince, in 1289, a natural son named Antoine. Charles of France wished that this child should take the name of his mother, whom he transmitted to his posterity, and, as an insignia of his illustration, permitted him to bear: Azure with three gold lilies, with a strip of silver broaching on the whole. Antoine de Brossard married Judith de Ponthieu and had two sons. From Charles, one of these sons, Lord of Tirancourt, and of Jacqueline de sister of the Count de Thierache, his spose (married in 1340), descended (by filiation) Colart de Brosard that of Colinette des Essarts, Had three sons: The first, Antoine II de Brossard, was lord of Saint-Martin-aux-Bois, near Blangy and Aumale, a manor and a veranda in which he lived and passed on to his descendants. Charles de Brossard, the second born, established himself at the place of la Broye, where he had a glass-factory built, and was the father of: Jean de Brossard, master of the Carlepont glassworks. Antoine de Brossard, knight-banneret, was knighted before Furnes in 1311. He was the first who owned the land of St. Martin; This land was a fief of Haubert, with a moderate and small justice, the right of sitting near the court of judges, and the first of the fiefs of Haubert, as being the most ancient of the court; he enjoyed other rights, according to the custom of Normandy. The manor of Saint-Martin was still in the family of Brossard during the Revolution. |
Note | Charles and Helene had a romantic relationship outside of marriage. At least two children were born to Helene by Charles: Antoine & Margaret. |
