| Note | Notes for Lunicia (Lucretia?) Shasteen Presumed to be the unknown Shasteen female b circa 1810-1815 in the 1830 census of William Shasteen in Henry Co. OH Probably daughter of William. Makes sense, in the proper area, William had land in Williams Co., Lunicia would have been born circa 1820 to be 20-21 yrs old at marriage. Sampson, Vincent and Jeptha listed immediately under James Shasteen in 1840 increases the likelihood that she was related to James b 1815. No place for her under Edmund or John, Robert or James unless you push the birth date. Lunicia Shasteen m Lampson Grove or Sampson Grove 23 Jun 1830 in Bryan, Williams Co., OH per IGI - This is far NW corner of Ohio and is probably a daughter out of Defiance/Henry County - from Patron Submission sheets of the Mormon Church. Bryan is about 10 miles nw of Defiance. Lunicia Shasteen m Sampson Grove on 23 Jun 1830 Williams Co., OH - Ref: PCFA Records "Gateway to the West" by Short & Bowers, Vols. VI, VII & VIII With Sampson Grove being on the 1840 census immediately under James b 1817, logic suggests that Lunicia was sister or cousin to James. Don’t think he would have to have provided affidavit for mother. If all brothers left town, no one else to provide affidavit. Assume that Shasteen is attesting to Holly Ann Grove being 18, marriage minimimum age, and that he is probably related to her in some fashion to be doing so. Believe she would be the daughter of Lunicia Shasteen and Sampson Grove married 23 Jun 1830 which would put her at an age of 18 to 22, or b 1830-1834. No success in finding them in the census. Grove Civil War 24th Ohio Infantry Co I Private M552 Roll 42 from Hillsboro, Highland Co. OH [Immediately southwest from Ross Co OH] - http://www.geocities.com/capitolhill/senate/1861/ and from John Rutherford Springfield, Missouri ovi24th@juno.com - Sampson Grove enlisted July 26, 1861, at Hillsboro, Ohio as a private in Company I, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Since his enlistment date is later than most of the other soldiers and his name appears at the bottom of an alphabetized roster of the company, I am guessing that Sampson Grove was a recruit after the company was formed. Sampson Grove seems to have enlisted on the day the 24th Ohio Infantry Regiment left Columbus and headed for service in West Virginia. His term of service was three years. - Company-sized photographs are unidentified for the 24th Ohio. A captain of Company I, Daniel McCoy, noted in July or August 1863 that a photographer was visiting his camp, so other companies from the 24th Ohio may have had unit photographs made also. - None of Sampson's descendants have contacted me, so no photo is available for Private Sampson Grove at this time. Some interesting information is available about Sampson Grove from Company I’s descriptive roll. Sampson was 20 years old at the time of his enlistment. [RDS b 1841] He was born in Highland County, Ohio. His occupation before enlisting was farmer. As for his physical appearance, Daniel was five feet, eight inches tall, had a faircomplexion, gray eyes, and dark hair. - Post-war information: - The 24th Ohio's veterans had a post-war reunion organization, but Sampson Grove is not listed on the reunion rosters. Sampson Grove must not have kept in close touch with other members of the 24th Ohio. - No pension record was found for Sampson Grove. |
