| Note | From "This Old Monmouth of Ours": John Hance (#1) came here from Dover, NH, although he is said to have been born in Wales. His wife's name was Elizabeth (#1). Tobias Hanson was a brother-in-law. Appointed "Schepen" by the Dutch 1673, afterward Commissioner of Highways, Member of the Assembly, and Justice of the Peace. Lived in Shrewsbury and is said to have died about 1710 from a cat-bite. His children were: John (below)(#2); Isaac who d. abt. 1709; Mary who m. an Antrom or Antrim;Elizabeth who m. a Worthly; Deborah who m. a Corlies; and Judith who m. a Hardman. John Hance (above)(#2), son of John and Elizabeth, was also of Shrewsbury, where he d. abt. 1729, leaving wife Elizabeth (#2) and children: Thomas who left a wife Abigail and children; John (#3); and more than one daughter. Of these, John Hance (#3) was of Freehold where he d. abt. 1746. The name of his wife is supposed to be Williamte (indicating Dutch extraction), and his children John (#4) {(who had children--John Antie, Aart, Williamtie, David, Jannetie, Marya, and Lena); Henrick (who had--Williamtie, John, Marya, Cornelius, Catryntie, and Jannetie); Jannetie, and Marya.} [portion betw. brackets from Errors and Omissions page]. This family has, for the most part, resided along the shore, but a prominent branch has long been seated at Holmdel. The Hance family must not be confused with the Honces, which latter descend from David Honce, a Revolutionary soldier who located in Marlboro township after the close of the war for Independence... |
