Note

Notes for: James Shasteen (ShasteadChastaine) b est 1755-1760

Marriage Information: Minister's Return recorded July 1, 1782 by Rev. Benjamin Coleman married James Chastaine to Phoebee Pagett, April 18, 1782 Order book 1773-1782, p 511 from Marriage Bonds and Other Marriage Records of Amherst County, Virginia 1763-1800 compiled by William Montgomery Sweeny, Baltimore Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1980

Census Information: James Shastead on the 1810 census of Amherst Co., VA with the following page 10 of 50 on ancestry.com and page 295 written on the document vertically to the right. The entire census was 25 pages, each cut in half or on two sides of a book as photocopied for 50 total. No indication of order, location, cities, towns, etc. (see research file)

Other information: James Shastead bought 100 acres of land in Amherst Co., VA in 1799 (Book H page 159) & James Jr. and Phoebe, his wife, sold 100 acres in 1812 (Book M page 380

James is on the personal tax roles of Amherst Co., VA from 1786-1793 and 1795-1812 and the land tax roles from 1790-1815 (except 1808 when no taxes were collected and no one was listed.) James is also listed on the property tax roles of 1790 as James Shasteen (J. River), same year another James Shastead shows up and is listed as James Shasteen (Pedlar - probably a location). The male names line up perfectly with the Chasteens / Shasteens of Ross, Henry and Defiance Cos., OH in the 1820 and 1830 censuses, from the combined 1810 census info for James Shastead of Amerst Co., VA and Robert Shasteen of Rockbridge Co., VA.

James Shastead, Sr. sold 130 acres of land in Amherst Co., VA in 1812 recorded in 1832 (Book U page 119) as result of suit in Chancery Court. Review Minutes? Per ? Recording deed by Court 1832 as result of suit by Richard S. Ellis surviving partner of late mercantile concern of John & Richard S. Ellis plantiff against William Davis and Robert Shastead, William Shastead, Edmund Shastead, Francis Shastead and Elizabeth Shastead, (no John, no James, no Mary, no Rosanna - were Francis and Elizabeth daughters or daughters in law? Francis wife of James Jr deceased by 1832, would fit Fanklin Shasteen James line.) heirs at law of James Shastead dec'd, defendants.

There is a possibility that James'grandfather was Pierre Chastain, a Huguenot physician who immigrated from France to escape religious persecution. Pierre was born in 1660, France. James served in the Revolutionary War, from 1777, for 4-1/2 years. He fought at Yorktown and was discharged the day after Cornwallis surrendered.
